The United States is becoming more environmentally friendly by using more solar and wind energy. Extension Educators are helping to make everyone more environmentally friendly by teaching them ways to use less, non-renewable resources. Extension Educator in energy, John Hay, spends a lot of his time learning about wind and solar energy as well as teaching to people of all ages. This fall, John talked about solar and wind energy in an online field trip that lasted about an hour.

He presented about the topics into questions from students all across Nebraska. Solar panels, in the last few years, have declined in price which has caused an increase in people purchasing them for businesses and homes. The UNL Animal Science building has solar panels on the roof even. John helps monitor the energy activity to make sure the panels are working properly.

Kinds Of Solar Panels

The Animal Science building has three different kinds of solar panels. The panels are different because of how the silicon crystals are grown. There are two wind turbines that are close to UNL and Lincoln. Lincoln Electrical Systems, or LES, began operating one of the wind turbines in 1998 and the other was in 2000. The first wind turbine that LES installed around Lincoln is 290 feet tall. Each of the blades is 77 feet. John was able to climb all the way to the top of the wind turbine. He said that it only took about 12 minutes to climb all the way to the top. Once he got to the top, he was able to see the edge of Lincoln including UNL’s East Campus.

Solar power to your mobile

Today I’m going to explain, how to charge your mobile phone using a solar panel so, for this experiment you’re going to need, A solar panel, A voltage regulating circuit, Your charging cable, Two wires and your mobile phone. Now your solar panel is the power source. When the sun rays directly hit on your solar panel, It converts solar energy into electrical energy. The output power you get from your panel depends on the ratings of the panel.

In my panel, here, they mentioned it as 3W and it produces a maximum voltage of 10V Then I have a voltage regulating circuit here, When I give variable voltage supply as input I get regulated output at this end. As most of our mobile batteries charge with 5V, here in this piece of the circuit I’m going to use 7805 voltage regulator. This is the circuit diagram to make a simple voltage regulating circuit here this is my solar panel, it is the variable voltage source here.

Diode Arrangement

Then I have a diode arrangement like this. These two terminals connected to regulator INPUT and GND terminals. and I connect two capacitors like this each of 10uF and 25V Then I get my regulated output voltage here which is suitable to charge your mobile Now I’m going to connect two wires to my solar panel and the other ends to the input terminals of the regulator So, my output of this circuit is now exactly 5V and I give it to my mobile through my charging cable. Now everything is fine to let’s keep the panel outside and check what happens.
